Album Review - Peter Cincotti - 'Metropolis' - Out Now - Concord Records

American singer songwriter Peter Cincotti released his debut album almost a decade ago, making a name for himself as a leading light in modern jazz. The following nine years have seen him develop further and further into the realms of pure pop, and new album 'Metropolis' represents another radio-friendly step for the New Yorker.
Though some of the chord progressions and phrasing does betray Cincotti's jazz background, the new LP is unmistakably a 'commercial' venture. 'Do Or Die' is reminiscent of Maroon 5 in their 'Songs About Jane Era'. 'Take A Good Look' meanwhile is a heartfelt ballad about lost love which could easily feature on a new album by The Script.
But don't let the popular direction of the album fool you - only the most anti-pop snob would dismiss this out of hand. Clocking in at just over 45 minutes, Cincotti has amassed a varied, effective collection of songs that never become dull or monotonous. Some tracks sit within Scissor Sisters territory, while others ('Nothings Enough') are far more steeped in rock tropes.
It all means that, although there is plenty here that should ensure airplay on commercial stations, there's also enough to intrigue those who might usually turn their noses up at the genre. As with the vast majority of albums, there are some tracks which are stronger than others, but there is a consistency here that is quite rare. Every song, at some point or other, has a moment that helps it stand out - a clever chord progression here, a driving rhythm there, a catchy chorus or two as the cherry on top.
There are plenty of people out there who would dismiss this album for no other reason than the fact that it's unapologetically pop-based. But to do so would be to miss out  - this is a gem, welcome proof that not everything written for the radio is soulless Cheryl Cole fodder. There is a painful twist to songs like 'Madeline' that genuinely make this album stand out from its peers - give it a chance and you'll be rewarded.
